Do Great People Need to be Perfect?

Recently, there has been lot of noise on 'The Great Soul', a biography of Mahatma Gandhi. There seems to be a hint about (platonic) attraction between Mahatma and another man. Whole bunch of people are either talking for the author or against him. Poor (? Is it all publicity gimmick!) author says that the letters have been very much in public domain.

Recently, I was reading a book on Lincoln (Team of Rivals), a well researched book, which is an inspiration for President Obama. It looks like Lincoln used to share his bed with another gentleman in the beginning of his career. Before our imagination starts running amuck, the author conveys that such arrangement, at that time, did not mean nothing more than sharing the bed! In fact, in later part of the book, the author points to Lincoln's public reference to sharing the bed and it was not perceived in any other way by the public.

Sometime ago, I had also read about inhuman treatment by Columbus to his sailors.

So, the question arises, Do Great People Need to be Perfect?

In my view, 'greatness' and 'perfection' are two different issues, though closely related. And many a time, they are confused for each other.

Greatness comes out of journey towards perfection which delivers great results for the humanity. In my humble opinion, attaining perfection is humanly impossible.

Staying away from the 'imperfections' mentioned above, Lincoln was the wisest and shrewdest among the great leaders. Many a times, he might not have followed the best method in achieving his goals. But he had followed the most effective and pragmatic way.

In Rajaji's Mahabharatha, the author mentions how Yudhisthira's chariot touched the ground after he  announced 'Aswathama hathah' (Aswthama died). Earlier, according to the author, the chariot always used to glide 4 inches above ground due to Yudhisthira's 'perfection'. Yudhisthira was forced by Krsna, to say that with respect to an elephant named Aswathama, which in turn, was the name of Drona's son. This announcement made Drona to believe that his son died. Which affected Drona's leadership in the war.

In the story, Yudhisthira was to suffer in heaven due to the above. Even Krsna, though was God, had to suffer due to some imperfections.

The great people had to deliver great results against many huge challenges, hence they might have been imperfect in their dealings. If greater benefit for larger society is achieved, against small price paid (Generally by the great person or people around her/him on their own accord.) then the action is pragmatic and effective. But, that does not mean that their greatness diminishes.

Great people, since they too are human beings, need not be perfect. So the people need not really bother about imperfections in great people. Rather, people should think of becoming great people while avoiding the pitfalls on the way to greatness.

Today, I came across an article on 10 dumbest things done by Steve Jobs  . Steve Jobs is a highly successful entrepreneur, (a great person for his fans!)  and he doesn't need to be perfect. The article made me to blog on the matter! I think, we need to distinguish these aspects and move ahead.
